Deciding your rate as a freelancer requires serious planning. You don’t want to overcharge or undercharge for the work that you deliver. Although there is not one correct formula, there are a few things to consider when calculating your rate. Since there are many freelancers in a variety of business fields, it is important to [...]

Right, you have prepared a killer portfolio of your work. Now what? How do people get to find out about you? More often than not, many freelancers battle to market themselves. They think the art of persuasion is best left to the high earning sales executives. Not true! When it comes to the art of selling [...]-
Hi Chantal. I looked for a page for FreelanceZA on Facebook. Can’t see one. Both Mark, from Outback Africa and I find that these page things work well. The NY times financial section had an article and rates each fan as wort $3.65. But joining pages with similar interest gains a lot of attention as well

Iain, you paint a pretty funny picture of the life of a freelancer:) Yes, you are right, it’s not easy, and it can be done. One needs to know when to quit – the full time gig.
When a freelancer has become established, the decision needs to be made whether to quit the full time job or continue burning both ends of the candle. I sincerely hope…[Read more]

Doing freelance work while working a 9 – 5 job holds two benefits. First, it diversifies your income stream. You no longer have a single salary to pay your bills. Even if your company downsizes and you are affected by a company wide retrenchment, the side income softens the blow. Secondly, freelancing for clients is [...]

A very worthwhile consideration, but one I have found from practical experience to be quite difficult to manage in practice. Working full-time during the day restricts your freelance activities to evenings and weekends. It may be possible to do both, but only for a limited time before the two burning ends of the candle meet in the middle and you…[Read more]

I think we are reading off the same page. I’ve always beaten the drum that freelancers need at least two income streams. The savings accumulated during the peaks of income when you are working usually don’t quite cover the troughs when you are not working and looking for the next job.
That where I’ve found Social networking busnieeses to be helpful.
